Why Do I Have So Much Misery? How Past-Life Karma Decides Who Is Born Rich or Poor, Healthy or Physically Disabled
Everywhere one looks in this world, one sees people unhappy and distressed for countless reasons—poverty, disease, debt, separation from loved ones, or persecution.

Good, pious, and honest people often seem to suffer far more than wicked people. When we see one newborn baby open its eyes in a billionaire’s palace with a radiant, healthy body, while another baby is born in a poverty-stricken hut or with missing limbs, blindness, or speechlessness, a painful question arises in the human heart: Is God unfair, or is the Universe nothing more than aimless, merciless chaos?
In Vedic Astrology (Jyotish), the answer is crystal clear: the Universe is not chaos—it is governed by the unbreakable Cosmic Law of Cause and Effect (Karma Phala). Every birth is a reincarnation, and the birth chart (Kundli) is the exact mathematical Balance Sheet of a soul’s past-life actions, determining the exact family, financial tier, and physical body a child receives at the first breath of life.
1. Why Good People Suffer: The Three Types of Karma That Govern Human Life
When someone asks, "Why am I suffering so much when I have done nothing wrong in this life?", astrology explains that the results we experience today are not dependent only on the merits or demerits of our present deeds, but also on an unseen hand (Daiva)—which is the ripening of our past-life actions.
As codified in Hindu philosophy and astrological science, every soul carries three distinct accounts of Karma:
Sanchita Karma (The Granary of Accumulated Past Actions): This is the total reserve of all good and bad deeds a soul has accumulated across hundreds of past incarnations—lying latent "like seeds stocked up in a granary for fruition in future lives". No human body could bear the weight of all past lives at once, so this main vault remains stored away.
Prarabdha Karma (The Operative Destiny of This Birth): This is the specific portion of past seeds that have already sprung up and whose machinery has been set in motion for this present life. Your birth chart (Horoscope) is the exact map of your Prarabdha Karma—it decides your parents, your genetic code, your wealth or poverty, your physical body, and the major pleasures and pains you are destined to experience in this incarnation.
Agami Karma (Future Actions Created by Present Free Will): These are the new actions you contemplate and perform right now through your conscious choices, which go on to shape your future and your next incarnations.
As Lord Sri Krishna declares in the Srimad Bhagavatam (10th Skandha, Chapter 24, Shloka 13 & Chapter 36, Shlokas 38–39):
सिद्धसिद्ध्योः समकुर्यात् दैवं हि फलसाधनम् ।
मनोरथान् करोत्युच्चैर्जनो दैवहतानपि ।
युज्यते हर्षशोकाभ्यां तथाप्याज्ञां करोति ते ॥Meaning: "Living beings are born and die, and receive pleasure, pain, fear, and welfare strictly according to their past deeds. One should maintain equanimity of mind in both success and failure, because the fruits of our efforts are accomplished through Daiva (past-life destiny). Though a person makes grand desires, they are often thwarted by fate, binding them to joy and sorrow under the supreme cosmic law."
2. Why One Baby Is Born in a Poor Family and Another in a Rich Family
Why does one child take birth in the home of a struggling security guard or daily-wage labourer, while another is born with a silver spoon into an aristocratic dynasty?
In astrological science, a soul does not land in a random womb. At the moment of birth, the map of the heavens acts as the torchbearer of Purva Punya (past-life virtuous merit, seen from the 5th, 9th, and 12th houses) versus Daridra Yoga (past-life financial misdeeds, usurping others' wealth, or cheating the helpless):
I. How Past-Life Actions Create Birth in Poverty (Daridra Yoga)
Classical Nadi and Parashari case studies reveal that when a person in their previous birth abused their wealth—such as cheating a poor worker of their rightful wages, usurping the property of siblings or widows, disrespecting parents, or turning away saints and the needy with arrogance—the planets record that exact karmic debt. In the next birth, this manifests through specific planetary locks:
Affliction to the Solar Ascendant (Surya Lagna) & 9th House: When the 8th lord (obstacles/debt) joins the Sun, while the 1st lord contacts the 6th lord and the 9th lord of fortune is pushed into the 6th house of debt, the soul is forced to take birth in a poverty-stricken family to experience the value of every single coin.
Intertwined Daridra Yogas & Bad Opening Dashas: When a chart is devoid of Raja Yogas and the child starts life under the planetary periods (Dashas) of afflicted 6th, 8th, or 12th lords, or when planets sit weak in the Navamsha (D-9) and Bhava Sandhis (junction degrees), it is the direct result of misdeeds from the previous birth.
II. How Past-Life Charity (Daana) Creates Birth in Affluence—Or a "Rags-to-Riches" Leap
Conversely, why are some souls born into immense wealth, or able to break out of childhood poverty to build massive empires?
The 5th, 9th, and 12th House Vault: When the 5th lord (past-life good deeds) sits in the 2nd house of family wealth, or when the 2nd, 5th, 9th, and 11th houses and Jupiter are powerfully placed, it proves the soul performed generous charity (Daana) and righteous actions in its previous birth.
Why Some Wealthy Souls Start in Poverty Until Age 24 and Then Become Rich: Sometimes, a soul with massive past-life merit (Purva Punya in the 1st, 5th, and 9th houses) still has a small unpaid karmic tax in the 2nd house (such as Ketu in the 2nd house or an opening 20-year period of an obstructing planet). Such a child is born in a humble or cramped home to burn off that ego-tax during childhood—often protected by a happy, resilient mind (Sun-Moon-Jupiter strength)—and the moment their favorable Mahadasha begins in youth, their past-life treasury vault unlocks, propelling them from rags to riches!
3. Why One Baby Is Born With a Beautiful, Healthy Body and Another With an Amputated or Disabled Body
Perhaps the most heartbreaking sight on Earth is a newborn baby delivered with an amputated limb, cerebral palsy, blindness, or the inability to speak, sit, or walk. Since a newborn infant has committed no sin in this present life, why does nature give one child a radiant, charismatic body and another a severely afflicted or disabled body?
In Maharishi Parashara’s Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (including Chapter 83 on Purva-Janma Shapa [Effects of Curses from the Previous Birth] and the chapters on Unusual Births) and the Nadi / Bhrigu scriptures, the physical body is governed by the Ascendant (Lagna), the Ascendant Lord, the Sun (bones/vitality), and the Moon (mind/nerves/blood):
I. The Astrological Signature of a Beautiful, Healthy Body
Every living offspring naturally radiates beauty and charisma when the soul is pure and the Ascendant (Lagna), the Ascendant Lord, Jupiter, the Sun, and the Moon are strong and unsullied by malefic planets. A benefic planet (especially Jupiter or Venus) in the Ascendant or Kendra protects physical limbs, boosts longevity, and forces other planets to bestow health and vitality.
II. Why a Child Is Born With an Amputated, Paralyzed, or Speechless Body (Angry Planets & Trika Afflictions)
According to classical scriptures, while some souls are born with sunny dispositions and brilliant faculties, others are born "without comprehensive faculties, without the faculties of speech, sight, hearing, or functional limbs as a result of certain grave actions in their past lives". Specifically, severe congenital disabilities manifest when the planets recording past-life cruelty or bodily harm to others (called "Angry Planets") attack the 1st House (Body), 2nd House (Speech/Face), or 6th/8th/12th Axis (Trika houses) at birth:
Delivery Without Hands, Feet, or Limbs (Amputated / Deformed Body): In Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Sage Parashara explicitly lists the birth of a child without hands, feet, or limbs as the ripening of severe past-life and lineage karma. Astrologically, the earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn) and the 2nd, 6th, and 10th houses rule the bones and skeletal frame, while Saturn, Mars, Rahu, and Ketu govern amputation, paralysis, and structural defects. When the Ascendant and its lord are crushed by the 6th, 8th, and 12th lords (Trika lords) alongside Rahu/Ketu and Mandi/Gulika, the physical vessel itself is damaged in the womb.
Case Study 1 — The 7-Year-Old Girl Who Could Not Walk or Raise Her Arms: In a documented case study, a young girl was born unable to walk or lift her arms. Her birth chart revealed Ketu in the Ascendant, aspected by a malefic 8th-lord Jupiter, while Saturn, Mercury, and the Sun were tightly afflicted together. Because the 8th lord (chronic/incurable karmic affliction) struck both her Ascendant lord (Venus) and her bone/nerve significators (Sun-Mercury-Saturn), her physical mobility was locked from birth.
Case Study 2 — The Boy Born Deaf, Dumb, and Unable to Sit: In another documented case (born August 12, 1993), the child of a corporate executive was born completely speechless, deaf, and unable to sit up. Why? His Ascendant was Aquarius with Saturn, while his 2nd house of speech (Pisces) and 4th house (Taurus, holding Moon + Ketu) were heavily afflicted, and the significator of happiness and vocal wisdom (Jupiter) was in an infant state (Bala Avastha) in the 12th house from its own sign alongside Mars in the 8th house (Virgo).
4. The Ultimate Message of Karma: Compassion, Not Condemnation
Does knowing that poverty and physical disability are rooted in past-life karma mean we should look down upon those who suffer? Never—in fact, Vedic astrology teaches the exact opposite!
Today’s Arrogant Rich Can Become Tomorrow’s Beggar: As the scriptures warn, "The wealthy sluggard may be a beggar in the next life". If a wealthy or healthy person uses their privilege to exploit the poor, harass a bride for dowry, cheat a worker, or mock the disabled, they are actively writing Daridra Yoga and bodily affliction into their own next birth chart!
Raising Consciousness Dissolves Suffering: A person with a weak Sun, Moon, and Jupiter gets disturbed by every small problem (just as for an ant, a single drop of water is a deluge), whereas strengthening the soul’s consciousness (Atma-Jnana) and purity of heart gives one the inner power to turn a mountain of a problem into a molehill.
Selfless Service (Seva) and Charity Cleanse the Karmic Ledger: The purpose of human birth is to awaken from ignorance, clear our pending karmic debts (Runanubandhana), and help those in distress. Serving parents and elders, feeding and clothing the poor, protecting animals, and supporting the sick and disabled with humility and love is the highest planetary remedy on Earth—capable of pulling both our body and soul out of the ocean of misery into lasting peace and grace.
